Sports Dietitian vs Nutritionist

DIETITIAN

✔ Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Nutrition, with coursework including medical nutrition therapy, biochemistry, epidemiology, food science, and counseling

✔ 1200 hour dietetic internship with rotations including inpatient, ICU, outpatient, pediatrics, food service, and more

✔ Passed the CDR board exams, uphold the Code of Ethics, maintain continuing education

✔ Highest level of personal nutrition care - hospitals, collegiate/professional sports organizations, and military only hire dietitians

✔ Sports Dietitian: maintain 1500-2000 hours in athlete care, pass CSSD exam every 5 years, uphold CEUs

NUTRITIONIST

✗ No formal education required, usually a weekend certification course, but no course is required. Similarly, anyone can be a self-proclaimed “coach” or “expert” - anyone can be a “nutritionist”

✗ No governing board for ethical reporting, continuing education

✗ Unable to work at the hospital, collegiate/professional sports, and military level as the nutrition expert
